Kasmirys are fond of non-veg foods and fish is a royal dish appreciated and relished everytime.

When it is fish in the meals,you can hardly resist, particularly when made in a traditional kashmiri style.

The moment you talk about fish as a dish, my taste buds start activating and anticipating the flavouring beauty.



Fish is a wonderful aquatic animal which garnishes my kitchen menu quiet often. Eat it fried,roasted or eat it cooked,everytime it is gonna make your day.

Kashmiri stream fishes like local kashir gaad, the brown or Rainbow trouts, the Salmon found in Running water and lakes or the cultivated ones in fish farms particularly Trouts offer a wide range of tastes.

Some fishes are with bone and some boneless and the taste too varies.
Depending upon their habitats from fresh water to running water to farms to lakes, the taste too varies accordingly.

More the oxygen content in the habitat , better the taste will it lend.

Health benefits

Fish provides omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B2 (riboflavin). Fish is rich in calcium and phosphorus and a good source of minerals, such as zinc, iron,magnesium etc.

Fish is a magicfood with a nutritional fill that does manage your mind, body, and maintains skin tone.

The abundance of beneficial proteins and essential nutrients in fish makes it a solid feast to keep your body lean and your muscles strong.

Eating Fish regularly regulates your sleep patterns both REM (Rapid eye movement) and Non-REM (Non-Rapid eye movement).

The essential nutrients in fish takes care of your body including liver and brain.

So it is healthy to include fish in our routine meals and an essential part of dining table or dasterkhwan, not because of its amazing taste only but the palatable proteins in it play a major role in our strong physique.

Fish is also a dietary supplement for your brain.

The studies show that people who consume fish regularly have more grey brain matter, which inhibits brain shrinkage and deterioration.

Fish also lowers the Symptoms of depression.

According to The National Institutes of Health, fish are a rich source of vitamin-D. 70% of the Americans do not meet the Estimated Average Intake (EAR) of vitamin D every year, so fish can be very helpful if you add more of the nutrient-dense food to your diet through its regular consumption.

Fish intake helps Improve Vision and overall Eye Health.

There are many ways you prepare and eat it but the traditional style made in every home here sounds great.

My sister Advocate Anjum Fayaz has been of great help in adding flavour to the recipe.

Ingredients needed.

  • Fish with bones or boneless 1 kg
  • Adrak lassun (Ginger and garlic) paste
  • Cumin (Zeera) seeds
  • Turmeric powder
  • kashmiri degi mirch
  • Oil
  • salt
  • Tomato puree
  • Green corriander
  • Black pepper powder,ginger powder,garam masala

Directions

  • Peel the fish scales (descaling).
  • Slice down the belly and remove the innards.
  • Remove the kidney line.
  • Cut the fish into slightly thick slices.
  • Wash them thoroughly.
  • Put them in a large bowl.

  • Add adrak lassun paste 2 teaspoonful.
  • Turmeric powder one teaspoonful.
  • Oil 3 teaspoonful.
  • Give a perfect mix.
  • Marianate for 20 minutes.


Important Tip here; 

Do not add salt while in marianation,it can remove the water content from inside the fish.

  • Heat the oil for deep frying.


  • Adjust the heat on medium while frying.
  • In the middle of the process of frying, sprinkle salt on the surface of the fish while frying.

This little change in the method will make the fish very crispy.

  • Fry the fish on both the sides untill it turns golden brown.



  • Take out the crispy fried fish on a plate.
  • Heat the pan dry and add cumin seeds half a teaspoonful, semi roast the seeds.
  • Add about 100 ml of oil and add tomato puree 1/2 kg.
  • Add 1 teaspoonful of salt and allow the puree to boil till the water content is reduced.
  • Add two teaspoonful of kashmiri degi mirch and one teaspoonful turmeric powder.
  • Add one teaspoonful of spice mix (black pepper,ginger powder,garam masala).
  • Boil for a while and add water half a liter and boil till the oil surfaces above the gravy.



  • Add the crispy fried fish and allow boiling for approximately 10 minutes.



  • Add green corriander (dhania) to garnish in the end.



The ultimate awesome mouth watering traditional gaad (fish) curry is ready to be served and tasted.
